Attachment and the Heart in Islam: Lessons from Yasmin Mogahed

By Deenulhaqq Editorial Team · Published

Attachment is often mistaken for love. We may believe that loving something deeply requires building our identity, security, and future around it. Yet love can remain a gift while attachment turns the gift into a condition for inner survival.

Yasmin Mogahed’s writing frequently explores the heart as a vessel and the danger of allowing created things to occupy the place of ultimate dependence. Her work does not ask people to stop caring. It invites a reordering: love creation without asking creation to carry what belongs to the Creator.

How attachment reveals itself

Attachment can gather around a person, a relationship, a career, beauty, status, control, money, a plan, or even the version of ourselves we want others to believe. The object may be permissible or genuinely good. The warning sign is not simply that we value it, but that losing it feels like losing the ground beneath our faith, worth, or ability to continue.

Detachment is not indifference

Healthy detachment does not require emotional coldness, neglecting responsibilities, or pretending that loss does not hurt. The Prophet loved deeply and grieved sincerely. The distinction is one of placement: blessings are held with gratitude, people are loved with mercy, and outcomes are pursued with effort, but none becomes a rival source of ultimate safety.

This reordering can be tested in private choices. Can we refuse what is wrong even if refusal risks an outcome we desperately want? Can we remain truthful when dishonesty might preserve an image? Can we thank Allah for a gift without believing life has no meaning if the gift changes?

A practical inventory for the attached heart

  1. Name what you most fear losing without shaming yourself for caring.
  2. Identify the promise you have silently attached to it: safety, identity, love, status, or control.
  3. Ask whether that promise is more than any created thing can reliably keep.
  4. Choose one action that obeys Allah even if the preferred outcome becomes less certain.
  5. Replace anxious control with duʿāʾ, responsible effort, consultation, and willingness to accept what you cannot command.

The heart becomes freer when a blessing can be loved without being asked to become its lord.

Choosing Allah over desire is not always a dramatic rejection. Sometimes it is the quiet work of loving with better boundaries, pursuing with less desperation, and remembering that every created support remains a support—not the Source.
